How To Keep Your Pets Safe During An Emergency

When an emergency strikes, people start to panic. We know that we need to get out of the situation, but many times we are confused about where to go or what to bring, knowing that your home may be destroyed in a hurricane or other disaster. While most people consider their pets to be part of their family, they may not know how to keep those pets safe during an emergency.

Knowing how to keep your pets safe ahead of time can help you prepare a plan of action should an emergency situation arise. Remember that if it’s not safe for you or your family to stay in your home during an emergency, it also isn’t safe for your pets. Never leave them behind if possible.

You’ll want to have an emergency kit for your pet, much like you have for yourself and your family. You’ll also want to make an evacuation plan which can be a bit trickier because many hotels or shelters don’t accept animals as guests unless they are qualified service animals.

Pet Emergency Kits

  • Leash, harness, and/or carriers for transportation
  • Food, drinking water, manual can opener, and bowls
  • Cat litter and pan if you have a feline
  • Medical records and medications in waterproof container
  • First aid kit
  • Name and number of veterinarian
  • Tag or microchip on all pets including your contact info

Evacuation Plans

  • Plan a few evacuation routes in case one or more of them are not accessible
  • Research which hotels along the route accept pets during an emergency
  • Find out which shelters accept pets, most American Red Cross shelters cannot
  • Make a list of friends or family members along your evacuation route and be sure you have their phone numbers
  • You may need to house your animals separately

"We purchased our Storm Smart hurricane screens last year for peace of mind during hurricane season. Little did we know that we would use them almost every day all year round! They not only offer protection in the event of powerful storms but they provide daily shade in the late afternoon sun as well as rain protection during afternoon showers, allowing us to use our lanai as an integrated outdoor living space. We love them and everyone who sees them, wants them."
