Predicting the 2010 Hurricane Season Update- Higher Chances

Colorado State Universities predictions for the hurricane season in 2010  were above average for the Atlantic Hurricane Season and an above- average probability of a major hurricane landfall in the United States and the Caribbean. In April, they refined the results toward the higher range of their previous report by now predicting 15 named storms and eight hurricanes, four of which could be major storms.

According to their calculations, there is a 69% chance that a major hurricane will make landfall somewhere on the U.S. coastline this year. The average for the last century was 52%. The tropical season sees an average of 10 tropical storms and six hurricanes. “We issue these forecasts to satisfy the curiosity of the general public and to bring attention to the hurricane problem,” wrote Philp Klozbach and William Gray, the authors of the Colorado State Study.

“This year has the chance to be an extreme season,”said Jo Bastardi, AccuWeather’s chief long range meteorologist and hurricane forecaster. ” It is certainly much more like 2008 than 2009 as far as the overall threat to the United States’ East and Gulf Coasts.”

Be Safe. Be Smart. Be Storm Smart.
