Hurricane Top Weather News In 2000 Decade

Hurricanes dominated the list of costliest U.S. weather disasters of the 2000s, all of which battered the Gulf Coast and Florida in 2004, 2005, and 2008, USA Today reported in January.

Nine of the top ten disasters were hurricanes, with 2005′s Hurricane Katrina topping the list at $125 billion in economic damages and Katrina was the nations deadliest disaster of the decade with more than 1,800 Americans killed, wrote the USA TODAY.

The only non-hurricane to crack the top 10 list was the Mid-west flooding of 2008, which caused $10 billion in damages, mainly Iowa, Missouri, Indiana and Illinois.

Hurricane Ike was the decade’s second-costliest disaster, with some $30 billion in damage reported in 2008. Round out the top five were Hurricane Ivan (2004, $18 billion); Hurricane Charley ( 2004, $16 billion); and Hurricane Rita ( 2005; also 16 billion).

Just think if everyone would have had storm protection, how much safer we all would have been?

Be Safe. Be Smart. Be Storm Smart.
