Activities to Keep Entertained During Power Outages

In today’s society, we are so hooked on technology that when the power goes out many people find themselves at a loss for how to keep themselves entertained. While you may be able to find something to do if the power goes out for a short time, more serious events like hurricanes can leave homes without power for days or even weeks.

During this time, you won’t be able to watch TV or use a computer. You’ll only be able to use your smartphone until the battery runs out, and even then you won’t have an internet connection. That means you’ll need to come up with some activities that don’t rely on electricity to keep yourself entertained. If you have kids, the task can be even more difficult.

Living in Florida means you should have plenty of sunlight during the day, and you should keep some candles or battery powered lighting on hand if you live in a hurricane zone. The old-fashioned hobby of book reading is a bit of a lost art that can certainly be enjoyed during a power outage. You won’t be able to check out anything at the library without power, so you may want to go to a used bookstore and purchase a couple interesting reads for both yourself and your children.

Board and card games are easy and fun ways to keep you and your family entertained. Even if you are alone you can still play solitaire, and many games can accommodate several players at once. Some of the same board games that were popular many years ago have stood the test of time including Monopoly, Risk, checkers, chess, or Battleship.

If you are able to, you may want to volunteer your time to help with hurricane relief efforts considering staying at home won’t be much fun. You can also use the time to start preparing for the next potential hurricane, including outfitting your home with hurricane protection products from Storm Smart.
